Taking the Ultimate Vacation

Departure: February 1, 2018 - Her body rests in peace. Her spirit, her soul, leaps for joy.

---------

How do you plan for your vacations?

These days, you probably do almost all of it online.

You pick a fun destination. (Google) You set departure and arrival and return dates. (Google calendar) You determine the costs. (Google spreadsheet) You book hotels. (Kayak)
If staying with friends or relatives, you make sure they’ll be home and will take you in. (Gmail) If you plan to travel by air, you might buy tickets ahead of time. (Airline websites)

About the only thing you wouldn’t do online is to pack clothes and any gear you think you’ll need.

Going to heaven is generally a lot easier.

It’s a fun destination. You don’t have to set a departure, arrival, or return date. (The first two are the same, and you won’t be coming back. Not that you’d want to.) The costs have already been paid by Jesus. A room has already been prepared for you by God. Your belief in all of this is your “ticket”.

There’s nothing to pack because you won’t need it and you can’t take it with you anyway.

So why am I writing about this?

No, I’m not planning on making the heavenly trip any time soon, as far as I know. However, my mother is.

She is the first member of my immediate family who will do so. She’s been on dialysis for quite a while and very recently decided to stop those treatments. Those of us closest to her all think this is a good idea. After all, it’s hard to argue against wanting to go to heaven. Even the Apostle Paul wanted to go there in what was probably the prime of his life.

So in the next week or two, we’ll probably be saying goodbye to Mom. We’ll be sad for a while that she won’t be with us anymore, but happy that she took the ultimate vacation.

We’ll meet up with her there someday.
