Here Comes the Sun

As of today, February 15, 2023, we are the happy owners of rooftop solar panels and related equipment. It's not quite connected and working yet, but it's close. (The power company has to come and install their meter first.)

Installation began this morning at 7:00 when the first Everlight van arrived.

The garage served as a temporary storage location for tools and such.

Cartons of tools and supplies

The power company arrived to shut off the power so everyone could work safely.

Disconnecting the power

He came back later to reconnect, after I was "in the dark" for about 4 hours. Not bad.

(The observant will note that some of the following shots are slightly out of order. Try not to be that observant.)

Using a ladder in the backyard, someone got the roof ready for brackets that would hold the panels.

Prepping for brackets

Soon after, a truck towing a lift (aka "cherry picker") backed into the driveway.

Lift arrival

A trailer carrying the solar panels arrived.

They loaded some tools and brackets, and up they went.

Going up

Soon after, the panels were quickly installed. I was kinda surprised how fast this procedure went.

All 11 in place

While all this was happening on the front, there was a lot of work going on downstairs (no pics) to bring the house up to code grounding-wise and more work going on in back meter-wise.

Replacing meter input

All was done legally. (This used to be on the front door.)

Building permit

By 1:00 everything was done, except for the meter from the power company.

New meter column and more meters

The really, really observant may have noticed that one of the feet of the lift was not resting on concrete.

Crop circle?

They did the best they could...3 outta 4 ain't bad.

EDIT: If you need to replace your roof, you get one free panel removal/replacement from Everlight.

So we have looked into this. We do have solar panels for pool. Our concern is in FL, homeowners insurance will drop you if you don’t replace your roof every 10 years….whether it needs it or not. We are at 10 years so could get a credit for it. But then in 10 years, they have to pull panels off to replace roof. It’s a dumb rule….but we are thinking about it.
